Ryanair and Easyjet will compete with Iberia on domestic flights from Barajas airport in Madrid. AENA reported yesterday of the new routes for the period October 2006-March 2007, highlighting the growth of cheap flights.
Ryanair will start operating from Madrid
The good cheap company Ryanair, has acquired the flight rights to launch a route between Madrid and Granada starting next winter. Although the company has confirmed this operation, it will have to evaluate profitability beforehand, before its start-up.
Ryanair operates from 14 secondary Spanish airports (Girona, Reus, Valladolid, etc.), and this initiative allows it to enter Madrid and on internal flights within the national territory.
EasyJet in Madrid
This new insertion of Ryanair in domestic flights is complemented by that of Easyjet, the other major company for cheap flights in Europe, which will also be able to offer internal routes this winter according to the Vancouver agreements. Easyjet could start domestic flights with routes to Tenerife, Bilbao, Lanzarote and Asturias, although these intentions will become final when the company determines whether to create an operational center in Spain (hub).
Vueling, also on the rise
According to the newspaper el País, a spokesperson for Vueling, the Catalan company for cheap flights that will grow the most at Madrid Airport in percentage terms, 384%, affirms that “We are growing a lot in Madrid because now there are more possibilities, especially in internal flights ”. And it is that the increase in capacity with the new Terminal 4, gives new possibilities to Madrid that companies are trying to exploit.

- Barcelona (27,618, 23.1% more),
- Malaga (14,561, 39.5% more),
- Palma de Mallorca (14,013, 30.4% more)
